Ali adds an international flavour to the Steve Campbell Memorial Tennis Trophy

The eighth edition of the Steve Campbell Memorial Trophy was held at the club on Saturday, 24th July.

16 players took part in this annual singles competition in memory of the popular former club member, once again favoured by some fine, sunny weather.

And this year there was an added international flavour with the appearance of Ali Alherz, 22 years old and one of the top tennis players in his native Kuwait.

Ali is currently living in Bispham while studying at Fleetwood Nautical College and has become a full member of NB&TC.

As usual in this event, there was some excellent tennis on display, particularly in the semi-finals and final.

The two semi-finals were extremely competitive, with Ali Alherz just getting the better of the 2018 and 2019 winner, Ellis Porter, by 7 games to 5; and Ryan Harding beating the 2015 and 2016 winner, Declan Pilling, by 7 games to 6 after a closely fought tie-break.

In the final, the games were square at 3-3 when unfortunately Ryan pulled a groin muscle which limited his movement slightly and Ali ran out the winner by 6 games to 3.

Ali has another year of studies at the Nautical College and so hopes to be able to defend his title next summer.

Winner, Ali Alherz, holding the Steve Campbell Memorial Tennis Trophy.
